Pop star Mariah Carey said on Friday that she was cancelling a tour stop in Brussels amid safety concerns following attacks this week that killed 31 people and injured some 270 more. The singer was scheduled to perform on Sunday – which is also her birthday – at the Forest National arena as part of her Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour.
Writing to her fans on Instagram on Friday, she said she’d been advised to cancel due to safety concerns.
“I love my fans in Brussels and at this time I am being advised to cancel my show for the safety of my fans, my band, crew and everyone involved on the tour.
“I hope to see you soon and I send my prayers and eternal love, laughter and light to my Lambs,” she shared.
US gossip website TMZ predicted the cancellation earlier this week, saying there were a number of reasons the arena could be targeted – she’s a famous singer who is engaged to billionaire James Packer and she’s performing on her 46th birthday, making it a special occasion.
At least 34 people were killed after suicide bombers blew themselves at the city’s international airport and a metro station in two separate attacks on Tuesday.
