Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are all about encouraging their teenage children, Willow, 15, and Jaden, 17, to challenge the norms.
Will opened up to BBC Radio 1Xtra about fostering individuality in their house, joking that they may have gone overboard.
“That may have been a mistake, we may have gone too far,” he said.
When the host asked Will about people “making jokes about Jaden in women’s clothes” — the teen wore a skirt to prom and modeled womenswear for a recent Louis Vuitton ad campaign — he was unfazed, saying it’s all about thinking outside the box.
"There’s a really powerful internal quality as an artist that as parents we encourage,” the “Suicide Squad” star said. “You gotta get out on the edge, you have to try things, you have to be comfortable doing things people don’t agree with and comfortable doing things that you can fail.”
As for his son, Will said Jaden is, “100 percent fearless, he will do anything. As a parent, it’s scary, it’s really terrifying, but he is completely willing to live and die by his open artistic decisions and doesn’t concern himself with that people think.”
