Former journalist who later joined AlShabaab sentenced to death for the murder of 5 journalists

A Somali military court on Thursday, March 3, sentenced a former journalist and media officer for Islamist group Al-Shabaab to death for the assassination of his fellow journalists. The court ruled he should be executed by firing squad. Hassan Hanafi Haji, 30, helped the jihadi group in identifying possible targets among the journalists between 2007 and 2011. Hanafi worked as a media officer for the Somali Islamist group’s radio Andalus, arranging news conferences in the years when the militants controlled the capital Mogadishu.

While working for for Radio Andalus, he would target journalists and threatened them with death if they refused to join the group. Many journalists were forced to flee Somalia after receiving threats from Hanafi. And according to the Committe to Protect Journalists (COJ) more than 25 journalists have been murdered in Somalia since 2007.
Eventually the Islamist fundamentalists were pushed out of Mogadishu by African Union peacekeeping forces in 2011 but they have continued to launch frequent attacks in attempt to disable the western-backed government.

Hasan Ali, chairman of the Somali military court in Mogadishu, told reporters that Hassan Hanafi  had admitted to killing one reporter and had been found guilty of killing five others. Several local journalists sat through the court proceedings, with the verdict welcome in a country where many feel those targeting journalists have not been held accountable.

“He will be put to death as soon as possible,” Ali said.

Hanafi, 30, has said he joined al Shabaab in 2008 when he was working as a journalist for a local Somali broadcaster. He was arrested in neighboring Kenya in 2015 and then returned to Somalia for trial. He had been promoted to commander in 2009. The following year, he was seriously injured in fighting.

“Al Shabaab killed many journalists, but personally I killed only one,” Hanafi said after the sentence was announced. “But I am indifferent if you kill me. You will see if killings will stop even after my death.”

Bloodstained knife found buried on OJ Simpson’s estate

A retired police officer claims to be in possession of a blood stained knife buried at O.J. Simpson’s old Rockingham Estate. TMZ reports below…

A construction worker found a knife buried on the perimeter of the former O.J. Simpson estate … and it’s currently being tested by the LAPD in a top secret investigation … law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

The story is incredible. We’re told a construction worker found the knife years ago — we have heard several different stories, ranging from “several years ago” to 1998, when the house was demolished. The weapon is a folding buck knife.
Our law enforcement sources say the construction worker took the knife to the street, where he saw an LAPD cop. He told the officer where he found the knife and the cop took it.
Turns out the cop — who worked in the traffic division — was off duty at the time, working security for a movie shoot at a house across the street on Rockingham. Our sources say the officer took the knife home and kept it … kept it for years.
In late January of this year, after the cop retired from the LAPD, he contacted a friend who worked in LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division (RHD). The cop told the friend about the knife and said he was getting it framed to put on his wall. He wanted his friend to get the DR (Departmental Record) number for the Nicole Brown Simpson/Ronald Goldman murder case, which he planned on engraving in the frame.
We’re told the friend was indignant, and told his superiors. The brass was outraged and demanded that the retired cop turn the knife over, which he did.

Our sources say the knife is currently being tested for hair and fingerprints. It will be moved to the Serology Unit next week, where it will be tested for DNA and other biological evidence.

One source familiar with the investigation tells us, cops who eyeballed the knife think it could have blood residue on it, but it’s hard to know without testing because it’s extremely rusted and stained. The investigation is top secret. It’s been logged into the LAPD’s computer system outside the official case file to maintain security. Our sources say, since O.J. was found not guilty, it’s still an open case. That means cops can continue investigating, but O.J. cannot be prosecuted again — double jeopardy.

Bobbi Kristina cause of death finally made public…died from a combination of alcohol, drugs and drowning

A U.S judge Thursday ruled that the autopsy report for late Bobbi Kristina Brown must be unsealed after a request by a news agency, WXIA, who wanted the records for a report on the heroin epidemic in Bobbi Kristina’s upscale Atlanta neighborhood.. and now, the cause of death has been revealed…

According to the coroner, Bobbi Krisinta died as a result of ‘Immersion of face in water complicating mixed drug intoxication.”

“The drugs involved included marijuana, alcohol (ethanol), benzoylecgonine (a cocaine-related substance), benzodiazepines (medications used for sedation or to treat anxiety), and morphine.”
“It could not be determined from toxicology tests whether the morphine resulted from heroin use. The other question which arises is manner of death. In other words, did death result from natural causes such as disease, an intentional act such as suicide or homicide, an unintentional cause (accident), or in an undetermined manner when a more specific manner of death cannot be established.”
The number of affluent young people who have died from heroin overdoses, including three of Bobbi Kristina’s friends, has dramatically increased in recent years.

While investigating, WXIA found Bobbi Kristina’s autopsy report was the only overdose death located in the hot zone that was sealed.

Brazil police detain ex-president Lula in corruption probe

Police searched the home of Brazil’s powerful ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and detained him for questioning Friday in a probe into a huge corruption scheme.

Agents searched his house in Sao Paulo, the offices of the Lula Institute, and houses of family members, Jose Chrispiniano, a spokesman for Lula and his institute, told AFP.

The federal police also issued a statement confirming earlier media reports of the dramatic development in Brazil’s corruption probe, dubbed Operation Car Wash.

Officials said that a major sweep including detentions and searches of properties had taken place in three states as police deepened their probe into a vast embezzlement and bribery conspiracy centered on national oil company Petrobras.

Authorities were to hold a press conference at 1300 GMT.

“About 200 federal police and 30 auditors served 44 warrants, including 33 warrants for search and seizure and 11 for detention for questioning,” the federal police said.

The operations in Rio de Janeiro, Bahia and Sao Paulo states involved probes into “corruption and money laundering, among other crimes practiced by various people in the context of the Petrobras criminal scheme.”

The news came a day after a bombshell claim by a Brazilian magazine that a former close ally of Lula and current President Dilma Rousseff — a senator who has already been charged in the Car Wash probe — was preparing to testify against them.

The report, although unconfirmed, sparked a furious reaction from Rousseff’s government and the president said in a speech that fighting corruption was her “first priority.”

Operation Car Wash has already netted a Who’s Who of Brazilian politicians and businessmen. These include numerous high-ranking figures from Rousseff’s Workers’ Party, including a former treasurer.

Lula, who was president from 2003-2010 and remains one of Brazil’s most influential figures, is being investigated over alleged ownership of a luxury apartment and a country house.

The properties, which he says do not belong to him, were allegedly renovated by companies accused in the Petrobras corruption scheme.

Both Lula and Rousseff are also facing political heat after the arrest of their former campaign manager, Joao Santana, who allegedly took money originally embezzled from Petrobras.

“I have not seen any of the social media posts because I do not have access to the internet but according to the police I’ve had lots of death threats.
“People are assuming too much and I’m getting a lot of abuse, which is pushing me to suicide.
“This has been going on for years. “There is only so much someone can take.”
Inspector Dave Meredith at Newquay police said:
“He had a few threats, with people making stupid comments on social media.
“We’ve told him, you need to be careful because of the video on Facebook; there’s lots of ill-feeling and animosity because of it”.

Some of the Facebook comments supported him while others were against him.

One said: ‘Leave the man alone the dog Hazel is well cared for. Vent anger towards what is really making you angry – (it’s) awful bullying a vulnerable man’.

One critic said: ‘I’m particularly disgusted as he conned £40 from an elderly gentleman I know to ‘pay for a B&B’ for the night’ Then went home! The poor elderly gent was distraught that his kindness had been abused in such a way’.

Another said: ”I brought him hot food and a hot drink was very rude and ungrateful in front of my sons who were 8 and 12 at the time. I told them most homeless people were grateful and not rude like him’.

On Wall Street, fears of a Trump presidency

At first glance, Donald Trump is everything Wall Street likes – a billionaire whose real estate empire has provided huge business for banks, and whose luxury towers house the rich and famous.

But his surprise success in the fight to win the Republican nomination for the US presidency has sent a chill over the heart of American capitalism.

The list of fears runs long: a president Trump could launch a trade war with China; he could increase taxes on the rich; he could interfere with the Federal Reserve over monetary policy; the White House’s relations with Congress could break down completely.

“He scares the markets. He is a big uncertainty,” said Greg Valliere, chief strategist for Horizon Investments. “The market does not like uncertainty.”

Businesses are disconcerted by the off-the-cuff comments Trump renders about crucial business and economic issues almost daily since hitting the campaign trail last year.

On one side, he has denounced huge salaries for chief executives, the greed of bankers and tax advantages that benefit wealthy Wall Street fund managers.

He has menaced the huge population of undocumented immigrants that effectively keeps up the supply of low-wage workers for US businesses.

He attacks China and Japan for manipulating their currencies for trade advantage and threatens to start a trade war with China. At the same time, he has declared his opposition to two huge free-trade accords spanning the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

He has even leveled attacks at the titans of US businesses such as Ford and Apple because they manufacture outside the country as well as inside.

But on the other hand, Trump courts US industry leaders with promises of business tax cuts. He also praises the skills of fellow billionaire Carl Icahn, one of Wall Street’s most successful activist investors, who stands out as one of Trump’s few vocal backers on Wall Street.

‘Mixed bag’ platform

“He doesn’t fit into any particular economic mold, he’s not a traditional conservative like Ronald Reagan,” said Mark Perry of the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank.

“His platform is really kind of a mixed bag of populist and isolationist types of policies that, he knows, will appeal to a lot of uninformed people.”

Former White House nominee Mitt Romney, who ran the prominent investment house Bain Capital before entering politics, gave voice to the finance community’s worries Thursday, warning that under Trump “the country would sink into a prolonged recession.”

“A business genius he is not.”

Perry pointed to one of Trump’s more obvious “hypocrisies” – having his own Donald J. Trump brand menswear collection manufactured in China even while blasting that country for cheap labor.

Chris Low, chief economist at FTN Financial, said some of his clients appreciate Trump’s position on cutting corporate taxes. But they also fear he could spark a trade war with China that could harm US businesses.

“We live in a globally connected economy,” Low said.

So far, however, markets have not reacted to Trump’s strong lead in the Republican White House race. Fund managers remain uncertain about his chances against the likely Democratic nominee, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, Low said.

“Trump’s success moving forward is likely to bring increased volatility,” David Lafferty of Natixis Global Asset Management predicted.

Among bankers, the sentiment is generally anti-Trump. Goldman Sachs chief Lloyd Blankfein last September pointed to the US president’s power to unleash a nuclear weapon. “The image of Mr Trump with his finger on the button blows my mind,” he said.

But most bankers contacted by AFP would not speak openly about their disdain for Trump, worried about possible reprisals.

“He is crazy, he has crazy policies,” one prominent banker said.

“He does not know how to run a business,” another said. “How can he run a country?”

Still, even as he weathered four corporate bankruptcies, Trump has amassed a fortune mainly
