Biafra Leader Nnamdi Kanu apologised to Buhari, Jonathan, Igbo elders

THE leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra and founder of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has expressed regret for referring to President Muhammadu Buhari as a terrorist, evil and a paedophile in his radio broadcasts.

Kanu, who has been charged along with two others by the Federal Government before a Federal High Court in Abuja on six counts of treason and other ancillary offences, said he intended to write a private letter to Buhari to express his apology to the President.

He also apologised to former President Goodluck Jonathan and Igbo elders for “some uncomplimentary things” he said about them.

The 48-year-old pro-Biafran agitation leader, who is, however, unapologetic about his demand for a Republic of Biafra, has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since his arrest in Lagos on October 14, 2015.

He tendered the apology for his comment against Buhari and others in a statement which he made to the DSS on October 23.

The prosecution, in its summary of the case, alleged that in one of the radio broadcasts by Kanu on August 1, 2015, he expressed his resolve to actualise the Republic of Biafra and “cast aspersions on the person and the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

The statement read in part, “Reference to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a terrorist, evil and a paedophile is regrettable and uncalled for and for that, I unreservedly apologise and will be doing so in a private letter to the President.

“Before PMB (President Muhammadu Buhari) there was the administration of Goodluck Jonathan. I also said uncomplimentary things about him and Igbo elders as well, which I now recognise should not have happened because it is un-African to be rude or insolent to elders.

“All I was trying to do is to draw attention to the problems afflicting society and something done about them.”

Kanu, who described himself as a Nigerian and a British citizen, justified his agitation for a Biafra Republic.

He said IPOB’s secessionist agenda was informed by the “incessant hardship, lack of holistic development in the socio-economic landscape of Nigeria, lack of youth employment, corruption in high offices and economic regression.”

He added that the agitation by IPOB, which, according to him, was founded in London in 2012 by a group of people from the South-South and South-East regions of the country, was in line with the United Nations Charter on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples ratified by African countries, including Nigeria.

In contrast to the counts of managing and assisting in the management of an unlawful society preferred against Kanu and two others, the Radio Biafra founder stated that IPOB, which the prosecution described as unlawful, was registered with the UN to pursue the rights of the people of Biafra.

He stated, “I can confirm that I, Nnamdi Kanu, is the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra worldwide as a legitimately and duly registered body at the United Nations pursuing the rights of a specific indigenous people, in this case, Biafra, to seek self determination according to the said charter.

“The reason for the formation of the Indigenous People of Biafra is to avail those referring to themselves as Biafrans the opportunity made available as a result of the United Nations declaration to seek the peaceful rebirth of Biafra in line with international law.”

Kanu, who is a son of a traditional ruler in Abia State, Sir I.O. Kanu, said he operated Radio Biafra, whose programmes “are designed to wake up the public from its slumber and address the issues of the time” because of his belief in free speech and freedom of expression.

He explained that the intended Biafra Republic comprised Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta states as well the Igbanke part of Edo State; Igala part of Kogi State and Idoma/Igede part of Edo State.

Apart from Kanu, one of the two other defendants in the six counts filed by the Federal

Bill Cosby: bail set at $1m during court appearance for sexual assault charges

Bill Cosby, the comedian and entertainer once known as “America’s dad”, appeared in court to face his first criminal charge for sexual misconduct on Wednesday, for an incident in which he allegedly drugged and violated a woman who considered him to be her mentor.

In a hearing lasting less than 10 minutes, Judge Elizabeth McHugh read out the three second-degree felony charges of aggravated indecent assault. He did not appear visibly moved; when asked if he understood the charges, he replied simply: “Yes.”

Bail was set at $1m, of which Cosby will have to pay 10% on Wednesday. Cosby faces up to 10 years in prison for each charge.

Cosby, 78, arrived at the Montgomery County district courthouse wearing a black and white cardigan and walking with a cane. He declined to answer questions. From the courthouse, he was transferred to Cheltenham police station for processing.

Earlier on Wednesday, Pennsylvania prosecutors had issued an arrest warrant for Cosby, 78, over an incident that happened more than a decade ago.

Kevin Steele, Montgomery County’s first assistant district attorney, said the victim was penetrated without her consent while she was impaired. “There is not a question in terms of pills being provided to her, there’s not a question as to what went on, of the digital penetration,” Steele said.

Andrea Constand, who first brought charges against Cosby in 2005, was named as the victim in the affidavit.

She had met Cosby through her work at Temple University in Philadelphia and had “what the victim believed to be a sincere friendship”, according to the affidavit filed on Wednesday.

NCC Sticks On Today’s Deadline To MTN

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said MTN Nigeria Limited must stick to today's deadline to pay a record N780 billion fine, even after Africa’s largest phone company prepares to try and overturn the penalty in court.
“The deadline remains,” Tony Ojobo, a spokesman for the NCC was quoted by Bloomberg as stating yesterday.

The NCC will consult with lawyers about what to do if the Johannesburg-based company doesn’t pay the fine today, he said, without providing detail on possible actions the regulator may take.
MTN is challenging the penalty at the Federal High Court in Lagos, after it said earlier this month the NCC didn’t have the power to impose the fine.

The regulator took action after MTN failed to meet a deadline to disconnect 5.2 million unregistered subscribers as security agencies seek to fight crime and Islamist militants in a country with poor identity records.
The regulator “will allow” the courts to do their work and the NCC is planning to challenge the MTN dispute filed in Lagos, Ojobo said.
MTN spokesman Chris Maroleng declined to comment beyond a December 17 statement announcing the decision to go to court. The company’s shares have declined 27 per cent since the fine was made public on October 26, valuing the wireless operator at 256 billion rand ($16.5 billion).

While MTN Chairman Phuthuma Nhleko has been leading negotiations with the Nigerian authorities after Chief Executive Officer Sifiso Dabengwa resigned, Ojobo said he wasn’t aware of any talks currently being held between MTN, the NCC and the federal government.

Naira against dollar to 262

The naira weakened against the United States dollar at the parallel market on Wednesday. The local currency closed at 262 against the greenback two days after it rose from 265 to 260.

Currency analysts had predicted that the naira would remain weak against the dollar at the parallel market until the first week of January following the suspension of foreign exchange sale by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The CBN had last Thursday suspended its weekly forex sale to Bureaux De Change operators till January 4, 2016.

The suspension, a normal practice in the financial services sector before the Christmas and the New Year holidays, is expected to exacerbate the current forex scarcity during the Yuletide season considering the continued pressure on the naira in recent times.

Analysts said the forex sale suspension would make the naira to remain weak, adding that dollar scarcity would make it difficult for the naira to appreciate during the Yuletide season.

They added that low activities during the Christmas and the New Year holidays could make the local currency to remain at its current level against the greenback, or possibly drop slightly.

The Acting President, Association of Bureau De Change Operators, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, noted that forex sales had been suspended till January while business activities had slowed down till after the break.

“For now, most activities have been suspended; the naira may remain at the current level till January,” he added.

The CBN sold $10,000 each to 2,088 BDC operators in its weekly forex sale last Wednesday, totalling $20.8m (N4.1bn).

Forex scarcity, which is causing persistent decline in the nation’s external reserves, has made the CBN to ration dollar supply to the banks, importers, the BDCs and the general public.

About two weeks ago, the CBN cut its weekly forex sale to the BDCs from $30,000 to $10,000 each.

Earlier, the central bank had refused to sell forex to over 1,600 BDCs over their failure to provide necessary documents for previous allocations. The development made the naira to fall from 241 to 280 at the parallel market two weeks ago.

The naira, which stood at 265 against the greenback before the Christmas holiday, had appreciated to 260 on Monday.

The currency had fallen to a record low of 280 to the dollar at the parallel market after beating what was initially regarded as a 42-year-low.

The CBN has also closed the interbank foreign exchange market till January 4, 2016.

PENGASSAN, NUPENG differ on new petrol price

The two major unions in the oil and gas sector, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas employees, on Wednesday expressed divergent views on the marginal reduction in the pump price of petrol.

The Federal Government had on Tuesday announced a reduction in the price of petrol by N1 per litre at filling stations being run by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and N0.5 at outlets of independent marketers.

This implies that from January 1, 2016, the commodity will be sold at N86 per litre in NNPC-run stations and N86.5 per litre in other marketers’ outlets.

While PENGASSAN said it did not understand what the government meant by the reduction, NUPENG, on the other hand, described the development as encouraging but wondered if it could be sustained.

The National Public Relations Officer, PENGASSAN, Mr. Emmanuel Ojugbana, told our correspondent that the association had yet to understand the reason why the government reduced the pump price of petrol.

He said, “We don’t understand what that means, i.e. the reduction of fuel price from N87 to N86 and N86.5 per litre. Is it that subsidy has been removed or that the price was reduced because of the fall in the price of crude oil in the international market? Will the reduction stop the sale of petrol at over N120 per litre in some places in this country? There are a lot of things that need to be made clear, not just to come out and announce that petrol price has been reduced.

“So, we have told the government that all stakeholders need to be engaged for us to have proper understanding of what the direction of the oil and gas industry actually is. For this association, we have yet to understand clearly the government’s direction on this fuel price issue.

“They need to engage stakeholders to explain the basis for the price reduction. How many filling stations even sell at the current price? In fact, there are a lot of issues that we need clarification on.”

In his reaction, the South-West Chairman, NUPENG, Mr. Tokunbo Korodo, told our correspondent that the government should be supported, but was quick to state that it must fashion out ways to ensure the sustainability of the reviewed petrol prices.

He said, “We can see that this government, particularly in the oil and gas sector, means business, unlike what we experienced in the past. Before now, we used to kick against deregulation because we didn’t believe in the sincerity of the past governments.

“But now, with what I am seeing, the system has changed and it, therefore, means that this government should be given a chance to see if it will maintain the integrity it claims to have. If Nigerians can buy fuel at a lower price, it is going to be a welcome development. But what we need is sustainability of that price and the availability of the product.”

Some marketers had on Saturday told our correspondent that although it was possible to sell Premium Motor Spirit at a reduced price, Nigerians might not be ready to absorb the fluctuations or modulations in the pump price of the product beginning from next year.

The Corporate Affairs Manager, Nipco Plc, an oil marketing firm, Mr. Taofeeq Lawal, had said, “It is possible, but the issue that the government needs to understand is that should there be fluctuations in price, will Nigerians be ready to absorb them?

ROB KARDASHIAN HOSPITALIZED WITH DIABETE

The troubled star has made few appearances in front of the cameras over the last year, as his family continue to share their love for him on social media

Rob Kardashian was reportedly rushed to hospital over the weekend amid claims he's been 'diagnosed with diabetes'.

The reality star, who has remained hidden from the limelight over the last year, reportedly felt unwell over the weekend so was taken to an LA hopsital.

According to TMZ, tests confirmed he is diabetic, which the star had previously been unaware of.

He is thought to still be receiving treatment there.

It comes more than a year after a doctor had warned him he risked death if he didn't change his lifestyle.

Rob sought medical help at the time, on the urging of his momager, Kardashain Klan matriarch Kris Jenner , and the family were horrified by the results of the tests.

In scenes which aired on Keeping Up with the Kardashians in March last year, the doctor advised Rob was at risk of developing diabetes and eventual organ failure, prompting Kris to lose it with her son.

"Your liver is shutting down," she told him. "This is life-threatening at this point. You can only sustain this level of being unhealthy for so long."

Rob - whose father Robert Kardashian died aged just 59 from oesophageal cancer in 2003 - agreed he needed to make changes and was later praised by his personal trainer for his hard work in the gym.

Newborn baby survives fall through train toilet

A baby delivered inside the lavatory of an Indian train slipped through the toilet bowl to fall on rail tracks but survived.

Police officer, Anil Sirohi said on Wednesday in New Delhi that a pregnant woman had labour pains while travelling on Monday on the train in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Monday.

He said that the 23-year-old went to the toilet and delivered a baby girl that slipped out and onto the tracks from the train.

“Passengers on the train heard her cries for help and pulled the emergency chain to bring the train to a halt.

“Moments later they ran toward the baby and found it was alive,’’ he said.

The officer said that the railway police moved both mother and child to a nearby hospital.
Railway official, Chandra Mohan-Jindal, said it was a miracle that the newborn girl survived after falling on concrete boulders of the track from such a height.

“Fortunately the train was not at a great speed as it had just begun its journey from the railway station.

Mohan-Jindal said that it was the second such incident in India this year.

Woman was mutilated and murdered by ISIS for breastfeeding her baby in public

A woman has been brutally murdered by ISIS's female police for breastfeeding her child in public, according to witness reports.

The woman had been breastfeeding her son under the cover of her burqa, in Raqqa, northern Syria when she was spotted by ISIS's feared women police force; the al-Khansaa Brigade.

Despite shielding herself and the child from public view under her full-veil burqa, the Al-Khansaa Brigade ruled she had been 'violating public decency'.

'An ISIS policewoman took the baby, gave it to another woman, and then killed the mother,' Aisha, a former Raqqa resident now living Turkey, told the Sunday Times.

The mother was reportedly mutilated before she was murdered, according to ISIS-linked social media accounts, where it was proclaimed the victim had 'violated public decency'

Nigerian gas explosion as people queued at the...

Up to 100 people killed after Nigerian gas plant exploded in ‘huge inferno’ as people queued for fuel on Christmas Eve

The fireball destroyed nearby buildings and left burned corpses littering the plant in Nnewi, according to witnesses.

The blaze, which stated at 11am local time on Thursday, consumed victims who had been waiting in line to collect crude oil from the Inter Corp Oil Limited gas plant – a subsidiary of Nigerian conglomerate Chicason Group.

A witness, Emeka Peters, said the fire broke out when a tanker truck that had finished discharging fresh gas at the plant left without waiting to observe the prescribed cooling time.

‘The fire exploded like a bomb, and the whole gas station went up in thick, black smoke amidst an explosion from cooking gas cylinders,’ he said.

‘Many people were killed, and most of them were those that had been in the station queuing all day to get their cylinders refilled.’

Service was arranged to mark the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Event criticised online with some people calling it 'sinful' and 'discraceful'
Church says there are 'parallels' between movies and Christian traditions
A German church has been condemned for being 'sinful' after holding a Star Wars service to celebrate the new film.

Children carried toy lightsabers to the church in Berlin and some of the congregation dressed up as Darth Vader to mark the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The service, on Sunday, was soon criticised on social media with some calling it 'sinful' and 'disgraceful'.

Ulrike Garve, a vicar in training, opened the Protestant service with the words 'The wait is over - the Force has awakened!'

A screen set up next to the altar showed a clip from a Star Wars movie in which Luke Skywalker fights off Darth Vader and declares to The Emperor that he will never turn to the Dark Side.

A man dressed as Jawa character arrives for the service. Local priests used the opportunity to point out parallels between the movie and Christianitywhile using the original film's score as organ accompaniment

China slams US over 'provocative' use of B-52 bombers in the South China Sea

Two US B-52 bombers have flown close to islands in the flashpoint South China Sea this month in a "serious military provocation", Beijing said, as tensions simmer in the disputed waterway.

China insists it has sovereignty over virtually all of the resource-rich sea, conflicting with the various claims of several neighbouring nations, and US activity in the area has provoked Beijing's ire several times in recent months.

"In the morning of 10 December, two US B-52 bombers entered air space over the Chinese Nansha islands [Spratly Islands] and nearby areas without authorisation," Beijing's defence ministry said.

"This behaviour is a serious military provocation which complicates the general situation in the South China Sea, [contributing] to the militarisation of the region."

Miss Spain gets promotion: Miss World

SANYA, China — Spain’s Mireia Lalaguna Royo was named the winner of the Miss World 2015 competition Saturday night in the southern Chinese island resort of Sanya, an event dogged by controversy over China’s refusal to allow Canada’s entrant to attend.
Sofia Nikitchuk of Russia was the runner-up and Indonesia’s Maria Harfanti took third place in the final following a lengthy competition featuring 114 women.
Each had won the right to represent their country in a series of local and regional competitions.
The victory marked the first-ever win for a Spanish contestant.
Lalaguna is a 23-year-old model from Barcelona with a degree in pharmacology who plans to pursue a master’s degree in nutrition. She placed first in the competition’s top model contest and appeared to impress the judges with her public speaking.
Not present was Miss Canada, Chinese-born Anastasia Lin, who had been prevented from boarding her connecting flight to Sanya from Hong Kong last month after China refused her a visa.
Lin is an outspoken critic of Chinese religious policy and a follower of the Falun Gong meditation practice, which was outlawed by China in 1999.
She said that after she won the Canadian title, Chinese security agents visited her father, who still lives in China, in an apparent attempt to intimidate her into silence.
China has hosted the competition seven times, starting in 2003, part of its attempts to project a more modern, outgoing image. However, the controversy over Lin’s attendance illustrates the authoritarian communist government’s determination to do so on its own terms, regardless of the cost to the country’s reputation.
Neither Beijing nor the London-based Miss World Organization has commented on the controversy.
It was the second consecutive year that outside events intruded on the competition. Last year’s contest in London was marred by the murder the month before of Miss Honduras and her sister in that country.
The first Miss World contest was held 64 years ago in Britain.
